1. Find the Perfect Spot for Your Shipping Container
Picking the right place for your container is the key to keeping it in great shape for years to come.
- Ground Conditions: Choose a dry, firm area. While placing your container on soil might seem easy, it can lead to dampness, rust, and sinking over time.
- Level Support: A solid foundation makes all the difference! Concrete blocks, pavers, or compact gravel help keep your container stable and ensure the doors open and close like a dream.
- Drainage Considerations: Avoid future headaches by making sure water can’t pool around or beneath your container. Good drainage helps prevent rust and keeps your container standing strong.

2. Check Local Rules & Give Neighbours a Heads-Up
It’s always a good idea to check in with your local council for any zoning rules or permits you might need. And if you share a driveway or have close neighbours, a quick chat to let them know about the delivery can keep things friendly. A little courtesy goes a long way!
3. Make Space for the Delivery Truck
Shipping containers are big, and the trucks that deliver them need room to move. Let’s make sure your site is ready:
- Clearance Requirements: Aim for at least 3 metres of height and width clearance. Look out for anything that could get in the way, like tree branches or power lines.
- Accessible Pathways: Double-check that the route to your property can handle a heavy truck. Narrow roads, tight turns, or soft ground can cause delays, so it’s best to plan ahead.
If you are unsure, we can always book in a site visit with your local Boxman team member, or Boxman transporter doing the job.

4. Choose the Best Delivery Option for Your Site
Depending on your space, you’ll want to pick the most suitable delivery method:
- HIAB Crane Delivery: Perfect if you need your container placed over a fence or into a tricky spot.
- Side Loader Delivery: Ideal for straightforward placements, where the container can be gently set down right beside the truck.
5. Plan Your Container’s Final Position

6. Secure Your Container
Consider investing in a heavy-duty, weather-resistant padlock, designed for shipping containers—especially a shrouded padlock for extra protection against bolt cutters. If your container has a lockbox, this adds another layer of security. Having your padlock ready before delivery ensures you can secure your container immediately.
